-election of president barack obama, politics on the national level headed in a decidedly liberal direction. so what happened? and what does it mean for the country going forward? joining the panel this week, "wall streetf journal" columnist and political diary editor jason riley and washington columnist kim strossel. dan, we would like to say for a longtime we live in a center right country. if you l look at the last two presidential elections, that doesn't seem to be the case. are we living in a new progressive era? >> in terms of the presidency, i think we are, paul. i am not sure about the country. i think what barack obama has in mind to do is indeed to redistribute income from the top downward and not to cut spending, but to increase spending. it is explicit from historic 20% of gdp to 25% of gdp. rather than cut spending, raise taxes as necessary to support the spending. and i would say that is in fact the french model. the question is whether that model can produce enough growth to support jobs in the economy.en >> noen question, jason. taxes are going up. we know that. spending going up for

obama. and politics headed in a decidedly liberal direction, so what happened and what does it mean for the country going forward. joining us columnist and detail editor, dani henninger and kim strassel. dan, we like to say for a long time we live in a center-right country. if you look at the last two presidential elections that doesn't seem to be the case. are we living now in a new, progressive era? >> in terms of the presidency, i think we are, paul. i'm not sure about the country. barack obama i think is the center left or left wing president since the great depression and i think that what barack obama has in mind to do is indeed to redistribute income from the top downward, not to cut spending, but to increase spending, it's explicit from a 20% of gdp to 25% gdp and rather than cut spending raise taxes as necessary to support that spending and i would say that is in fact essentially the french model. and the question is whether it can support enough growth in the economy. >> paul: taxes are going up, we know that, spending, going up for sure even before the health care law kic

interview president obama said compromise will be a key to making a deal. >> it is very important for republicans in congress to be willing to say we understand we are not going to get 100%. we are willing to compromise in a serious way. >> senate leaders hoped to send a plan right about now. the talks have broken down. listen to what senate leader said on the floor a short while ago. >> now, i'm concerned about the lack of urgency here. i think we all know we are running out of time. this is far too much at stake for political gamesmanship. the consequences of this are too high for the american people to be engaged in a political messaging campaign. i am interested in getting a result here. >> we have been trying to come up with some counteroffer to my friends' proposal. we have been unable to do that. i had have had a conversation with the president and that this stage we are not able to make a counteroffer. >> what happens now? with us is cello o'donnell and kristen welker. >> we are sort of at a pause point. if you are looking at the tone of these leaders what is i think optim

was modestly optimistic about a deal on taxes. speaking in the white house briefing room, president obama condemned congress for failing to resolve its differences in in normal way. he held firm to middle-class tax cuts to families making $250,000 per year. joining me now from the white house is nbc's kristen welker. kristen, let's take a look at what the president said about what he expects from the senate. >> i just had a good discussion from house leadership about how to prevent this on the middle class. i believe we can reach an agreement. if an agreement isn't reached in time between senator reid and sno senator mccollum, i will reach to him. i believe such a proposal could pass both houses with bipartisan majorities as long as the leaders allow it to actually come to a vote. if members of the house or the senate want to vote no, they can. but we should let everybody vote. >> kristen, this up or down vote seems to be the big news of the day. isn't this what the white house wanted all along? >> well, it is and it's president obama's way of saying, look, vote on his basic proposal, the

lindsay graham and president obama -- the state of our fragile economy. president obama made his final argument, placing the blame squarely on congress, specifically, house republicans, mr. obama is cautiously opt mifertic that lawmakers will reach a watered-down deal, but no mention of debt, tax reform or entitlements. i'm shannon bream. the senate will convene in an hour. we have team coverage on capitol hill and at the white house. we start with mike, live on capitol hill. what's the latest on republicans? and how are they reacting to the comments we heard from the president? >> reporter: good afternoon. the critical comments from president obama in a critical stage in these negotiations, certainly seem to hit a nerve. a spokesman for senator mitch mcconnell says while the president was tapingly those remark, senator mcconnell was trying to bring republicans and democrats together on a solution. the spokesman notes, discussions continue. if senator mcconnell and harry reid can reach a deal in the next couple of hours, leading senate republican notes there is no guarantee it will pas

. but with pessimism running high, the vice presidents go involved in negotiations. president obama says the inaction of any deal is the result of republican resistance. >> they say their biggest priority is to deal with the deficit in the biggest way. but their only priority is making sure that tax breaks for the wealthiest americans are protected. at some point, i think what's important is that they listen to the american people. >> joining me now, congressman chris von holland of maryland. good evening. it is a good sign that chained cpi is off the table. the senate will be back tomorrow at 11:00. how high is your optimism or pessimism at this moment? >> well, it was a very bad sign when senator mcconnell put this social security change on the table, as part of a small deal, that was obviously something that could have totally thrown a monkey wrench into the process. so the fact that they backed off that is obviously good news. but as senator reid said, there are lots of obstacles still to go. and the fundamental issue remains what the president just said in that clip. both today and for the last

? $250,000 which obama originally proposed? $400,000 which he supposedly offered in a revised offer a week ago? and then, of course, the status of the sequester. we have $1.2 trillion in cuts over ten years, half from defense and half from nondefense discretionary spending. is there any indication if there's a deal today what they're talking about in terms of those two issues? >> we're reading tea leaves but we can say that on saturday there were the most senior-level staffers who were doing the nitty-gritty negotiations. we're told paper was exchanged back and forth meaning proposals being outlined and going back and forth with details. we're told the sticking points we'lly do center around that income threshold. where would you set a new tax level awhich everyone would pay higher taxes? how much income could you protect for the majority of americans? 250 is the number the president started with. as you point out he had withdrawn his earlier offer of $400,000 as the income threshold and ali al haidaris say that's because that was a part of a much bigger plan and now the expectation

of this country and i will not. >> chris: and you heard president obama say we have to get out of that habit. not going to start trading debt ceiling increases for spending cuts. >> i think the key to what lindsey is saying is that you don't affect people on these programs now. you do it in a way for the too you tour so that long-term the programs are eceptionly changed and more constricted. is not entire early popular on my side but it is realistic, i think. i think this is a very hard time for people. and we need to get by this and we need to have a robust economy again. and it can happen i'm convinced. if we solve this and move down you can do those things that enabled the programs to be solvent in it an -- on an extended basis without impacting people directly now. >> chris: senators, we need to take a quick break here. when we come back we will discuss where the investigation into the benghazi terror attack stands now and whether congress will act in the new year to try to prevent more mass murders. ♪ constipated? yeah. mm. some laxatives like dulcolax can cause cramps. but phillips'

the scenes, but as for publicly right now, melis melissa, the white house is not talking. president obama is basically launching this public campaign to pressure republicans. president obama came out on friday and urged them to get behind his plans. again today he sat down with david gregory, of course, during that exclusive interview on "meet the press" and urged republicans to act saying that it appears all they are interested in is protecting taxes for wealthy americans. republicans, by the way, lashed out at those comments saying the president seems more interested in placing blame instead of actually leading, but that at this point in time seems to be president obama's strategy to some extent, publicly pressuring republicans to act and to move on these negotiations. so that is where this stands right now. the white house monitoring everything that's going on the hill quite closely, but i can tell you, melissa, that there is a sense of optimism that is waning here at the white house. you can sense that when you talk to the officials here. >> well, the eternal optimist. vice president
